Acceptance of Terms
By accessing our website, attending our classes, or using any of our services, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. These terms apply to all members, visitors, guests, and anyone who accesses or uses our services.
If you do not agree with any part of these terms, you must not use our services.
Under-18s: If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must agree to these terms on your behalf and is responsible for your participation. Parental/guardian consent is required before attending any classes.

Carlson Gracie Blackburn & Clitheroe provides the following services across our two locations:

Membership Terms
Membership Types
Drop-In
Pay per session. No commitment required. Ideal for visitors or occasional training.
Monthly Membership
Recurring monthly payment with unlimited access to all scheduled classes.
Annual Membership
Discounted annual rate with unlimited access and priority booking for events.
Student Membership
Discounted rate available with valid student ID. Full-time students only.
Member Obligations
- Provide accurate and up-to-date personal information at registration
- Inform us promptly of any changes to your contact details, medical conditions, or emergency contacts
- Maintain payments in accordance with your membership plan
- Adhere to all academy rules, codes of conduct, and instructor directions
Free Trial
New members are entitled to one complimentary trial class. The free trial is limited to one session per person and cannot be transferred, combined with other offers, or used more than once.
Payment & Fees
Payment Schedule
- Monthly memberships: Payment is due on the same date each month via direct debit or recurring card payment
- Annual memberships: Full payment is due at the time of purchase or renewal
- Drop-in sessions: Payment is due before attending the class
Late Payment
A £10 late payment fee may be applied to overdue accounts. If payment is not received within 14 days of the due date, your membership may be suspended until the outstanding balance is cleared. We will always attempt to contact you before taking any action.
Refund Policy
- Monthly memberships are non-refundable once the billing period has commenced
- Annual memberships may be eligible for a pro-rata refund in exceptional circumstances at our discretion
- Drop-in payments are non-refundable
- Membership freezes may be arranged for injury or extended absence — please speak to us
Conduct & Behaviour
Expected Behaviour
All members, visitors, and guests are expected to:
- Show respect to all instructors, training partners, staff, and visitors
- Maintain excellent personal hygiene — clean gi/rashguard, trimmed nails, no jewellery on the mats
- Arrive on time for classes and follow the warm-up procedure
- Train safely and respect tap-outs immediately
- Keep the training area and facilities clean and tidy
Prohibited Behaviour
The following behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in immediate suspension or termination of membership:
- Aggressive, reckless, or intentionally harmful behaviour during training
- Use of illegal substances, alcohol, or attending classes under the influence
- Harassment, bullying, or intimidation of any kind
- Discrimination based on race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected characteristic
- Theft or deliberate damage to academy property or other members' belongings
- Unauthorised recording, photography, or live-streaming on the premises
Health & Safety
Medical Disclosure
You must disclose any medical conditions, injuries, allergies, or physical limitations that may affect your ability to participate safely in training. This includes pre-existing conditions and any new injuries that occur between sessions. Failure to disclose relevant medical information may affect our ability to ensure your safety.
Requirements
- Participants must be physically capable of engaging in martial arts training
- Appropriate training attire is required (clean gi for Gi classes, rashguard/shorts for No-Gi)
- Mouthguards are strongly recommended; additional protective equipment may be required for certain sessions
Safety Protocols
- All participants must follow instructor guidance at all times
- Tap-outs must be acknowledged and respected immediately
- Any injury, no matter how minor, must be reported to an instructor
Medical Emergencies
Our instructors hold current first aid qualifications. In the event of a medical emergency, we will contact emergency services immediately and notify your emergency contact. By attending our classes, you consent to receiving first aid treatment in an emergency situation.
Liability & Insurance
Assumption of Risk
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport that carries inherent risks of injury. By participating in our classes and activities, you acknowledge and accept these risks. You confirm that you are participating voluntarily and understand that injuries including — but not limited to — bruises, sprains, fractures, and joint injuries may occur.
Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Carlson Gracie Blackburn & Clitheroe, its instructors, and staff shall not be held liable for any personal injury, loss, or damage to property arising from your use of our services, except where caused by our negligence. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by English law.
Insurance
We maintain appropriate public liability insurance. We strongly recommend that all members obtain their own personal sports insurance to cover injuries sustained during training or competition. We are not responsible for loss or damage to personal belongings left on the premises.
Intellectual Property
- No recording: Photographs, videos, or live-streaming on the premises are prohibited without prior written consent from the academy
- No unauthorised branding: The Carlson Gracie name, logo, and any associated branding may not be used, reproduced, or represented without explicit written permission
- No material reproduction: All website content, training materials, curricula, and resources are the intellectual property of Carlson Gracie Blackburn & Clitheroe and may not be copied, distributed, or reproduced
Privacy & Data
Your use of our services is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data in compliance with the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.

Class Cancellations
We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule individual classes due to instructor illness, facility issues, low attendance, or other unforeseen circumstances. We will provide as much notice as possible via our social media channels, website, and direct communication. Cancelled classes will be rescheduled where possible or credited to your account.
Membership Cancellation
- Monthly memberships require 30 days' written notice to cancel
- Cancellations must be submitted in writing via email to carlsongracie.bc@gmail.com
- Your membership remains active until the end of the notice period
Cooling-Off Period
In accordance with the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have a 14-day cooling-off period from the date of purchase to cancel your membership for a full refund, provided no classes have been attended. If you have attended classes during this period, a pro-rata deduction may apply.
Termination
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your membership immediately, without refund, in the following circumstances:
- Conduct violations: Breach of our code of conduct or prohibited behaviour policies
- Non-payment: Persistent failure to pay membership fees after reasonable notice
- Safety threats: Actions that endanger yourself, other members, instructors, or staff
- Fraud: Providing false information, identity misrepresentation, or misuse of membership benefits
Dispute Resolution
In the event of any dispute or concern, we encourage the following resolution process:
Direct Communication
Speak directly with your instructor or a member of the management team to resolve the issue informally.
Formal Complaint
Submit a written complaint to carlsongracie.bc@gmail.com. We will acknowledge receipt within 48 hours and aim to resolve the matter within 14 days.
Mediation
If the dispute cannot be resolved through direct communication, both parties may agree to independent mediation.
These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any legal proceedings shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
Changes to Terms
We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms of Service at any time. When we make changes, we will notify you through:
- Email notification to all active members
- Notices displayed at our training facilities
- Updated terms posted on our website with a revised date
Continued use of our services after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms.
